How to get rid of an old mattress in Watford

Every practical way to dispose of a mattress in Watford, from the council collection and the local tip to retailer take-back, with the local costs and rules that matter.

An old mattress propped against a wall ready for collection in Watford

Quick answer

A mattress cannot go in your wheelie bin. If you can get it outside, a council bulky collection or a tip run is usually cheapest; if you are buying new, ask the retailer to take the old one. For a mattress stuck upstairs or several beds in Watford, a private collection is easier.

Your options at a glanceSection titled Your%20options%20at%20a%20glance

A mattress is too big for a wheelie bin, so the realistic choices in Watford are a booked council bulky collection, a trip to a household waste recycling centre, asking a retailer to take the old one when you buy new, or a private collection. The comparison below sets them side by side.

Book a Watford Council bulky waste collectionSection titled Book%20a%20Watford%20Council%20bulky%20waste%20collection

Watford Council's bulky waste collections are arranged through Veolia. On its large household items page, the council charges £57 for up to three bulky items (excluding electricals and sofas or upholstered items) in one collection, and a minimum of £98.50 for other bulky items or garden furniture. Items must be left outside the front of your property. Residents receiving council-related benefits can get 50% off, with proof.

The page does not mention mattresses by name, so we cannot say which band one falls into. When you book, describe the mattress and its size to Veolia and ask them to confirm the price. You book by emailing enquiries.watford@veolia.co.uk with a description of the items, the number of items, your name, address and phone number, or by calling 020 3567 6900. Veolia then calls back to arrange a slot and takes card payment. Council prices and rules change, so recheck the official page before booking.

Take it to the tip yourselfSection titled Take%20it%20to%20the%20tip%20yourself

Watford Council lists two recycling centres run by Hertfordshire County Council: Waterdale and Rickmansworth (Watford Council recycling centres page). Waterdale, on St Albans Road near Garston (WD25 0PR), is the nearer of the two. Hertfordshire County Council's Waterdale page sets out these rules:

  • You need an ePass to visit recycling centres in Hertfordshire, and vans and trailers need one too.
  • Bring proof of address, such as a driving licence, Council Tax bill or utility bill.
  • Waterdale is open daily from 10am to 5.30pm, apart from Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.

Neither the county page nor the council page mentions mattresses or any charge for them, so check with Hertfordshire County Council before loading the car. Rules and charges can change.

Retailer take-back when you buy a new mattressSection titled Retailer%20take-back%20when%20you%20buy%20a%20new%20mattress

Many bed retailers will collect your old mattress when they deliver a new one, but terms vary by retailer and by order. Some charge per item, and many need the old mattress to be accessible and ready to move at the time of delivery.

Ask before you pay: whether there is a fee, whether the old mattress must be taken apart or wrapped, and whether the collection happens on the same visit as the delivery. We have not quoted individual retailer prices because they change.

Can you donate or sell an old mattress?Section titled Can%20you%20donate%20or%20sell%20an%20old%20mattress%3F

Reuse is only possible for mattresses in very good condition. The British Heart Foundation's furniture donation page says mattresses count as upholstered furniture, so they need a fire safety label firmly attached or sewn in, and must have no obvious stains, rips, marks or odours. Stained, torn or smelly mattresses may be refused.

We have not confirmed that its collection service covers Watford addresses, so check with your local store first. A worn mattress is better disposed of through one of the other routes above.

When a private collection makes senseSection titled When%20a%20private%20collection%20makes%20sense

Paying for a collection is worth it when the mattress is upstairs or in a flat, there are several beds or a whole bedroom to clear, nobody can lift it, or you cannot wait for a council slot. Watford Clearance carries it out and disposes of it through licensed routes. If you hire anyone to take waste away, GOV.UK advises checking that the waste carrier is registered.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions

Can I put a mattress out with my bins in Watford?Section titled Can%20I%20put%20a%20mattress%20out%20with%20my%20bins%20in%20Watford%3F

No. Watford Council treats large items as bulky waste, booked through Veolia and charged per collection. Do not leave a mattress beside your bins unless a collection has been booked. Prices and rules change, so recheck the council page before booking.

Does the tip charge for mattresses?Section titled Does%20the%20tip%20charge%20for%20mattresses%3F

We could not confirm this. Hertfordshire County Council's Waterdale page does not mention mattresses or charges, so check with the county council before you go. You will need an ePass and proof of address either way.

What happens to a mattress after it is collected?Section titled What%20happens%20to%20a%20mattress%20after%20it%20is%20collected%3F

It depends on the collector and the site. Mattresses sent to a recycling facility are typically stripped into materials such as metal springs, foam and fabric, while others go for disposal. Ask whoever collects yours where it will end up.
