Quick answer
A sofa in good condition with its fire label can often be donated or sold. A worn one goes to a council bulky collection or the tip, where upholstered seating is handled separately. If it is upstairs or will not fit in the car in Watford, a private collection is easier.
Your options at a glanceSection titled Your%20options%20at%20a%20glance
If your sofa or armchair is clean, undamaged and still has its fire-safety label, donating or selling it is the best first step. Otherwise your realistic Watford routes are a booked council bulky collection, a trip to a Hertfordshire recycling centre, or a private collection. Council prices and rules change, so recheck the official pages before you book.

Why sofas need special handlingSection titled Why%20sofas%20need%20special%20handling
Most sofas and armchairs contain flame retardants classed as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Under the GOV.UK guidance on waste upholstered domestic seating containing POPs, this waste must be kept separate from other waste and destroyed by incineration at an authorised facility. Landfill operators must not accept it. The guidance covers sofas, armchairs, recliners, kitchen chairs, stools, futons and bean bags, but not mattresses, curtains, blinds or beds.
The guidance is written mainly for waste operators, so it does not set out rules for householders. We did not find a page from Watford Council or Hertfordshire County Council describing a separate container or collection day for upholstered seating, so ask before you travel. The extra handling is the reason sofas are listed as their own category in the council's charges.

Taking a sofa to the tipSection titled Taking%20a%20sofa%20to%20the%20tip
Watford Council says two Hertfordshire County Council recycling centres serve the area: Waterdale (St Albans Road, WD25 0PR) and Rickmansworth (Riverside Drive, WD3 1FS).
The Waterdale page says you need an ePass to visit, including with a van or trailer, and should bring proof of address. It is open 10am to 5.30pm daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The page lists a "soft furnishings" bin but does not say whether sofas go in it, so check the council's A-Z tool or call the site before loading the car.

The British Heart Foundation collects furniture free from your home if its service covers your postcode, which you check on the booking form. Upholstered items need a fire-safety label firmly attached or sewn in, and must be saleable: no rips exposing inner fabric, and no obvious stains or odours. A local store contacts you within five working days, and you usually need to be present.
Hertfordshire County Council's reuse page also names Cancer Research superstores, Emmaus, Keech, Spruse and Sue Ryder as charities offering free furniture collections, and says textile furniture without a fire retardant label cannot be accepted for reuse. Check each charity's own conditions first. Selling on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree or eBay, or giving it away on Freecycle or Freegle, are other ways to find a taker.
When a private collection makes senseSection titled When%20a%20private%20collection%20makes%20sense
A paid collection is worth considering when the sofa is upstairs or will not fit through the door without dismantling, there is other furniture to go, nobody can lift it, or you cannot wait for a council slot. Watford Clearance carries it out and disposes of it through the correct licensed route.

Common questionsSection titled Common%20questions
Will the council take a sofa in Watford?Section titled Will%20the%20council%20take%20a%20sofa%20in%20Watford%3F
Yes, through a booked bulky collection. Watford Council charges £57 for up to three sofas or upholstered items, and you leave them outside the front of your property. Recheck the page before booking, as prices and rules change.
Can a charity collect my sofa?Section titled Can%20a%20charity%20collect%20my%20sofa%3F
Yes, if it is in good condition. The British Heart Foundation collects furniture free where it covers your postcode, but upholstered items must have a fire-safety label attached and be free of rips, stains and odours.
Can I cut a sofa up and put it in the bin?Section titled Can%20I%20cut%20a%20sofa%20up%20and%20put%20it%20in%20the%20bin%3F
We would not recommend it. The GOV.UK guidance says waste upholstered seating must be kept separate from other waste and incinerated, so it should not be mixed into general rubbish. We did not find a Watford Council bin page covering sofas, so use a bulky collection, the recycling centre or a licensed collector instead.
